SHARE YOUR FEELINGS
Whatever it is, talking about it can make all the difference.
I cannot recount the number of times when I felt like people who were in the same position as I was were better than me. It was especially bad during my first semester as a graduate student. However, I started talking to people and what I realized was that many people felt the same way. As humans, we tend to compare ourselves to others. Yes, there are people who are probably more talented in certain areas, but their talent shouldn’t scare you because you are vastly talented in areas they most likely lack talent in. Graduate school is a collection of students with various strengths and weaknesses. It is important to realize that although someone else is busy publishing papers, winning fellowships, thriving in class, or working on amazing data, this doesn't mean they have more worth than you.
Your time will come and everyone’s story is different.
KNOW you earned it.
You need to realize that you got that offer because people believed in you. They took a long time to ponder on it and came to the conclusion that you have the capability to work hard and achieve goals. They believed you had all it took to overcome obstacles in your way. Realize that you earned your spot.
EXPRESS how you feel.
Sharing ones feelings can be a step towards freedom. Talking about your feelings will make you know how everyone else feels. One step towards regaining that sense of confidence for me was realizing that most people around me felt the exact same way. Talk to your mentors, friends, or family. Be kind to yourself.
STOP comparing yourself.
This is a big one. You need to realize that you are absolutely unique in your own way. If every student was the same or had the same story, school will be boring. Even though so and so is recognized today does not mean you will not be recognized tomorrow. Do all you can to make the most out of your experience.
INVEST in other things.
Aside from school or research, think of activities that make you feel happy and accomplished. For me, it can be as little as cleaning my apartment. It could also be going to the gym, joining a boxing class, dance class, book club or art class. It could honestly be anything. Find “your thing” and consciously make time for it.
